Undoubtedly the most famous example of a preserved smokestack. The Tate Modern. Formerly the Bankside Power Station, Tate now has a modern art and contemporary art collection among the most extensive in the world. Similar to the Encina Power Station, the Bankside Power Station underwent construction between 1947 and 1963. Likewise, for years the developers tried to destroy it. However, a group of Londoners came together to save the iconic structure, while suggesting possible ways to repurpose the defunct structure. Finally, the Londoners prevailed with the Tate Gallery deciding to bring the Tate Modern to Bankside. Despite undergoing nearly no structural changes to the chimney, it remained so popular and central to the London landscape that the city would go on to spend 18.2 million pounds, about 30 million dollars at the time to build the Millennium Bridge as a direct pathway to the Tate.
